Drill, Routine or Plan?

Let's start with some definitions.

  1. A Drill is a shot or short series of shots designed to focus on one, maybe two aspects of squash. For example, a boast and drive drill focuses on movement to and from the T as well as accurate hitting.
  2. A Routine is a collection of drills designed to cover a few aspects. For example, a 20-minute volley routine designed to improve your confidence when volleying.
  3. A Practice Plan is a collection of routines that have been carefully designed to address specific aspects of squash.

Maximise Your Training

Time on court is precious, so don't waste it

A structured routine beats random hitting. Practicing without a plan is like baking a cake without a recipe. It's possible to make something delicious, but not the best way to do it.

A proper plan helps you make better use of your time on court. It keeps your practice focused and gives each session a clear purpose.

Consistency Builds Confidence.

Brief Overview

Practice plans contain 3 elements: PDFs, videos and a free app.

Each full practice plan includes 12 routines. Every routine comes with a PDF sheet detailing the drills, their timing, and brief descriptions, along with a video demonstrating how to perform each drill effectively.

Currently, one full practice plan is available: FastFocus. More are in development. Standalone routines are also available for free, with new ones added occasionally.

The optional companion app, BetterPractice, is free and works alongside the plans and routines to provide timing control with audio and visual guidance during your sessions.

Practice Today, Stronger Tomorrow.

Pricing

When you purchase a plan, it's a one-off payment for lifetime use.

It's not a subscription or SaaS. You buy the plan, receive the PDFs and links to the videos and you keep them.

There are two options available:

Individual: 40 Euros

Commercial: 99 Euros

The Individual option is for you and your training partner.

The Commercial option is for clubs, facilities, coaches, organisations or governing bodies. Full details are below.

The BetterPractice App

Make your practice easier to manage with the BetterPractice app.

All pre-made practice plans can be used with the FREE BetterPractice companion app. The app provides text and voice instructions meaning you don't need to print and follow a PDF file.

After purchasing one of the pre-made plans simply use the code displayed on each routine. Oh! And it's super easy to use, works offline (once the voices have loaded), and you don't even need to create an account.

When To Buy The Commercial Option

Are you a club, facility, organisation, coach or training squad?

The Individual price is for you and your training partner. Any more players involved and you really should buy the Commercial option.

The commercial option gives you permission to put the PDF sheets on a noticeboard in one facility and even distribute photocopies within that facility. Sharing via WhatsApp or other digital services is also allowed for users and/or members of that facility. There's no limit on the number of people allowed within one facility, but please be fair.

There is also a Discord server for users of the BetterSquash Practice Plans as well as for general squash chat: Visit the Discord Server page to learn more.

"I truly believe that 99 Euros for a lifetime usage of all the routines in a full plan is EXCELLENT value.

Even if you only have 25 members in your facility, that's only 33 cents for each routine!"

Testimonials

Read a real testimonial from a real player

"Phillip's solo sessions have been a real game-changer for me. They have provided a great way to build my ball control & swing skills, and expand my range of shots beyond my previous repertoire. They have enabled me to plot a path of gradual, consistent improvement in my match performance, & also reduce injury niggles such as the stiff racket arm elbow that used to bother me, but now far less."

If you have benefitted from using my Solo Routines, I would love to hear from you and hopefully publish a short testimonial.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you can't find your question, please email me.

The BetterPractice app has its own webpage with its own FAQ section.

Equipment & Space Requirements

Besides a standard squash racket and suitable balls (see my Use The Right Ball guide), no special equipment is required. However, having a few extra balls (with one held in your non-racket hand to keep it warm) can help maintain momentum, and using A4 paper targets is occasionally recommended.

I recommend booking a 45-minute slot for each 30–40 minute routine. This gives you time to perform the full routine properly and even have some time left over to repeat any drills that focus on your weaknesses.

Yes, I suppose you could, but obviously it's better to use a proper squash court.

Skill Level & Progression

The practice plans are uniquely structured around themed routines and focused drills that are designed to improve specific aspects of your game. Each routine comes with a detailed PDF guide sheet, an explainer video, and access to the BetterPractice app, ensuring you get the most out of every practice session.

I don't advise using the Club Players Sets. They are designed for players who play competitive club squash. However, some beginners have purchased Set One FastFocus and reported that they benefited from it. Sometime in 2025, I will be releasing a Beginners set, but I have no release date for that.

Yes, especially if you had previous experience. The Club Players: Set 1 can help you rebuild your skills methodically. Focus on quality over quantity as you regain your touch.

Most players notice improvements in their ball control within 2–3 weeks of consistent practice (2–3 sessions per week). However, significant improvements typically take 6–8 weeks of regular practice.

Between 30 to 40 minutes. But one great thing about the routines' structure is you can repeat or jump sections to suit your needs, ambitions and time available.

Honestly, that's a tough one to answer. Ideally between 5 and 10 times per month.

Yes, players should feel free to adapt and adjust their training to suit their needs.

Each routine is themed and generally focused on certain aspects of ball control.

Programme Implementation

For optimal results, I recommend 1–2 solo practice sessions per week. This frequency allows for skill development while preventing burnout.

I recommend performing each routine twice before moving onto the next one. Rotate through all 12 routines to build a broad foundation. Once you identify specific areas needing improvement, you can focus more on those particular routines.

Absolutely! While the routines are designed to be comprehensive, feel free to extend sections that address your weaknesses or modify drills to target specific aspects of your game.

Technical Integration

The explainer videos are hosted on YouTube as unlisted. It is possible to use other websites and services to download, but I don't offer that as part of the package.

The Discord invitation link is included in your welcome email and on the PDF sheet. Discord can be accessed via a browser or an app. An account is necessary to access a Discord server. In the Discord server, you can ask questions, share your experiences, and get direct advice from Phillip and other Solo Routines users.

Using The Plans With Other Players

For coaching purposes, you should purchase the Commercial option, which permits sharing the routines with students in your facility.

While designed as solo routines, many drills can be adapted for partner practice. The Discord community is a great place to ask about partner adaptations for specific routines.

A Commercial licence allows you to post the routine on your noticeboard and make a reasonable number of photocopies to distribute within your facility. Consider posting a "Routine of the Month" on your noticeboard and organising designated solo practice sessions where members can work on the routines together but individually.

BetterPractice App

Yes, the BetterPractice app is user-friendly and designed to guide you through each routine with visual and audio cues.
